Mobility: Mobile and Web Solutions

Next-generation mobile and web solutions for business clients and private customers

«How to create a future-proof software ecosystem with cutting-edge platforms, improved overall experience and increased usage rate based on UCD principles?»

Definition of problem

Switzerland’s leading carsharing provider, Mobility, has commissioned us to design and develop next-generation web solutions and mobile apps for several projects since 2017. Adnovum UX was significantly involved in each case, as the focus was on a modern design, a user-centric process, and a cross-platform, responsive behavior.

Some solutions, such as the clients and customers portal, were technologically outdated at the time and no longer met the demands of the users. In addition, the apps were inflexible, difficult to manage, and neither cross-platform nor responsive. Key improvements were therefore as follows: creation of a consistent end-to-end experience of the Mobility brand across all interfaces; optimization of each solution to its specific user context (indoor on desktop and outdoor on mobile devices); ensuring direct access from anywhere and at any time to all available Mobility services (shop, extras); design of an overall, consistent, intuitive and simple navigation.

Thanks to the standardized UCD process, it was possible to create a solid basis right at the beginning and to make user-centered enhancements based on that. In addition, the development time could be shortened. The iterative approach has therefore paid off and the projects are a great success.

Design process

Adnovum UX started the projects with an «Explore» and «Analyze» phase in which all requirements and framework conditions were analyzed. On this basis, many sketches for individual screen ideas and for consistent navigation were created in the «Ideate» phase. Then they were discussed and refined in several iterations. Adnovum UX repeatedly challenged client decisions in terms of UX and contributed new ideas and perspectives. With this material, we finally created comprehensive models for the entire Mobility ecosystem and made interrelationships and interfaces visible. A completely new, dynamic pricing mechanism was also created. This allowed new ideas to be developed methodically and the existing UX content to be tested and verified.

In the «Prototype» phase, interactive prototypes, including a modern visual design, were created. This allowed the appearance and behavior of the new platforms and apps to be simulated and tested. Working HTML prototypes were also created to get an even more realistic feel for the software and to do real-time testing with it. The results from this phase were also discussed and further developed in several iterations. Adnovum UX then created comprehensive style guides for Mobility that describe all behaviors and design rules of the user interfaces in detail. During the development phase, usability tests with real users still provided essential insights and contributed to major improvements.

«The portal and mobile app offer almost the same amount of functionality to the clients and their customers, but are very different in terms of how they are used. Whether at home on a computer or on the go, both options contribute to the overall Mobility user experience.»

Added value

1. Improved products thanks to UCD

The UCD user-centered approach has greatly improved products and brought to light many problems that otherwise would have been discovered much later and delayed development.

2. Top communication and efficiency

Thanks to the collaborative approach and the visually documented solution in the interactive prototype, communication in the project team was always focused and work could be done efficiently. Also, the UI style guide helped to implement everything very precisely during the development.

3. Focused development without problems

Thanks to the good basis that UX had created with the prototyping and the style guide, the development ran very efficiently and without major problems. The budgets could be met.

4. One-stop shop Adnovum

Mobility could request more resources based on their needs. Additional experts from Adnovum thus realized further projects, such as the Mobility app for Mobility, in a short-term and uncomplicated manner.

5. Consistency

Since all solutions for Mobility were designed and developed by Adnovum from a single source, a high level of consistency and efficiency was achieved. There was no loss of knowledge due to handovers of material, nor were there any breaks in style due to changing personal preferences.

«The UX design team helped us understand the needs of our users and was instrumental in making our project a success.»
